Musical Theatre Melodies - 18th August - Kurt Weill on Broadway & "Breaking Into Song"

Rob Morrison's next "Musical Theatre Melodies" broadcast on Tuesday, 18th August at 9 p.m. will feature the conclusion of Kurt Weill and Ira Gershwin's The Firebrand of Florence, (based on the play The Firebrand by Edwin Justus Mayer), from the 2000 London concert cast recording starring Rodney Gilfry, Lori Ann Fuller, George Dvorsky, Felicity Palmer and Simon Russell Beale.

This will be followed by excerpts from Kurt Weill and Alan Jay Lerner's 1948 Broadway musical Love Life, from the 1996 London studio cast recording "Kurt Weill on Broadway" featuring Thomas Hampson and Jeanne Lehman.

The second half of the broadcast will feature an archival audio interview conducted by Mel Atkey in 1982 with the American musical theatre performer, Reid Shelton (1924 - 1997), talking about creating the role of 'Daddy Warbucks' in the original production of Charles Strouse and Martin Charnin's Annie and of his early career performing in such musicals as Wish You Were Here, By the Beautiful Sea, My Fair Lady, Brigadoon, Carousel, South Pacific and 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

This has been kindly provided by Mel to mark the publication of his latest book Breaking Into Song - Essays, Articles and Interviews on Musical Theatre, (Friendlysong Books, Vancouver - London, 2015), which includes the interview in transcription form. (See www.lulu.com/shop/mel-atkey/breaking-into-song/paperback/product-22178567.html for further details.)
