Rob Morrison's next "Musical Theatre Melodies" broadcast on Tuesday, 1st March at 9 p.m. will feature a 40th Anniversary tribute to the musical revue Bubbling Brown Sugar, (featuring the music of Harlem from the 1920s to 1940s), from the 1976 original Broadway cast recording starring Avon Long, Josephine Premice, Vivian Reed and Joseph Attles with Ethel Beatty, Carolyn Byrd, Chip Garnett and Barry Preston.
This will be preceded by an introduction to the musical (via Skype) from New York-based theatre critic and Internet columnist - Peter Filichia.
And will be followed by song selections from the 1952 studio cast recordings of Eubie Blake and Noble Sissle's Shuffle Along and Jimmy McHugh and Dorothy Fields' Blackbirds of 1928 featuring Cab Calloway, Avon Long, Thelma Carpenter, Louise Woods and Laurence Watson.
The broadcast will conclude with an interview with award-winning actor, Mitchell Butel about his direction of the Melbourne premiere season of the musical Violet opening at Chapel off Chapel in Prahran later this week. The interview will also include two songs from the score (by Jeanine Tesori) sung by Australian cast members, Samantha Dodemaide (in the title role of 'Violet') and Barry Conrad (as 'Flick'.)
